August belonged to the sun. The month opened on a deserted beach in Zanzibar, where Teddy Marks photographed Anna Ioannova after the light had gone soft, a jewel-toned cloth trailing behind her like a brushstroke, the evening breeze off the Indian Ocean, and a body that had stopped performing and simply started dancing. It closed the same way it began, on the coast: Oscar Bueno's "Oh, Paradís," with Paula Tomas skipping through the Mallorcan surf at golden hour, entirely in her element, in what is less a series than a love letter to summers that refuse to end. Between them, on the wind-carved dunes of Fuerteventura, Wolfgang Natich stripped the colour out entirely and let La Sy become part of the landscape's own architecture, every curve answering a ridge of sand, light and shadow distilled down to feeling.

The heat did not only make things languid; it also made them insolent. In "Rizz," Max Zadorozhnii found Ilona Iolanka at a remote campground with a 1974 camper van, a straw hat, dark glasses and black patent pumps, and nothing else at all. Grainy black-and-white, a sagging lounge chair, chrome curves warm to the touch, she turned the whole dusty place into a runway and dared the summer to keep up.

Then the month went indoors, but the temperature did not drop. Nicolas Larriere's "Discipline" gave Kiana Cretet a bare studio, a school chair and hard light, borrowing the vocabulary of obedience only to hand her the authority: leather, skin, steel, every pose held like a sentence, no set and no story to hide behind. Rémi Martinez went somewhere cooler still, into a derelict room of discarded mattresses and grimy windows, where Ksenia Lytvynova glows like alabaster in the amber dust and quietly refuses the decay around her. Two rooms with nothing in them, and in both the body turns out to be the only architecture that matters.
