October moved between two kinds of light. In the tropics it arrived whole and golden: Adame found Olivia Linz in a secret Balinese garden under a late-afternoon sun, Nikolay Ivanov letting her dissolve into the vegetation around a secluded pool, while The Hut woke with the first rays filtering through rustic bamboo walls, Ludo Paul photographing Catherine Usik on film in a hideaway where every grain of the stock seems to hold the morning. Between them, Sun-woven took a single day as its whole structure — Matthieu Sonnet watching Deneb Delmas weave herself a dress of dry palm fronds at Hacienda Can Olivera and lose it fibre by fibre as the sun climbed, on the steps, by the pool, along the white walls, until only light and palm shadows remained and she slept on the warm stone.
Elsewhere the light was made rather than found. Richard Stow sculpted Lindsay Hancock out of shadow for Serpentina in a Los Angeles studio, a black-and-white series in which the discipline of haute couture keeps giving way to something more exposed. Thomas Ruppel worked a related register in Affina, where ethereal window reflections lay silky glints across Beatrice Talenti’s skin and avant-garde fashion elements drift in and out of the frame. Rémi Martinez emptied the space entirely for The Room, trusting Synastasia to fill a sparse Parisian interior with presence alone — and she does.
Running beneath all of it was a quieter question about what it means to be seen. Nika’s Nest answered it almost by accident: Lolita Astrakhantseva photographing Veronika Bondaruk on film in her own bed in Barcelona, a morning that was never choreographed and never needed to be, the viewer admitted less as an observer than as a welcome guest. Closer Than Skin asked it outright. Laure Surlerivage and La Sy, working with the photographer Sacha Leyendecker, write about the space between two bodies where desire can exist without becoming possession, where to be sensual is not to be available and to be seen is not to belong to the gaze that sees us. It is the month’s plainest statement of something the other series keep arriving at from the side.
