Krista

for MARLEY

Late summer, somewhere between staying and leaving.
There's a particular kind of light that only exists at the very edge of a Dutch summer.
It's low, it's unhurried, as if the sun itself is reluctant to let go.

Here in the warm sand, nothing needs covering.
The dunes and the grass remember the heat from the last few months, the wind has already seen this body.
It has been circling and longing for it all summer long.

The sea is cool, but not too cold.
A final stretch of warmth clinging so desperately to the coastline before autumn comes and takes it away.
In the midst of the waves, the sun is barely a suggestion on the horizon.

The body becomes one with the ocean for one more rendezvous.
This is not a goodbye, it is merely an exhale. Somewhere behind us, autumn is already waiting.
It hasn't noticed us yet.
